H1N1 Information

The symptoms of H1N1 flu virus are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include:

  • Fever greater than 100 degrees   
  • Body aches                                         
  • Coughing                                              
  • Sore throat                                           
  • Respiratory congestion
  • Less common, but seen In some cases - diarrhea and vomiting
  • USD 353 Students & Staff will be sent home for a fever of 100 degrees or higher.  The ill person is to stay home until they are fever free (without having to take fever reducing medications) for at least 24 hours.  They may be instructed to stay home longer by their Physician.
  • Check with the school your student attends for their specific policy related to absences.

What should I do if I have symptoms?
Individuals with the above symptoms should contact their physician, who will determine what treatment is needed.   

What else can I do?
As during any cold & influenza season, individuals are encouraged to take the following steps to reduce the spread of viruses and infections:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or if handwashing facilities are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer which should get rid of most germs.   For more information on handwashing go to - www.kdheks.gov/H1N1/download/handwashing.pdf 
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to co-workers, friends, family or other students.
  • USD 353 Students & Staff will be sent home for a fever of 100 degrees or higher.  The ill person is to stay home until they are fever free (without having to take fever reducing medications) for at least 24 hours - or as directed by their Physician.
  • Keep students home if they have vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues, and wash hands after sneezing.
  • Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting adequate rest and exercise.
  • Consider taking the Seasonal Influenza Vaccination and/or the H1N1 vaccination (when available).
