May 5, 2008

Today is Cinco de Mayo, (the 5th of May),a day when Mexico celebrated the defeat of invading French armies in the year 1862.  The students learned a little about the history of Cinco de Mayo, and they completed a Cinco de Mayo “fun packet” as they completed today’s seatwork.  The students also enjoyed hitting a piñata and gathering the goodies which dropped from it  The students had previously learned about piñatas, fiestas, and other celebrations during one of their earlier reading stories, so Cinco de Mayo provided them with a fun way to review what they had previously learned.

The students also listened as Mrs. White reviewed information about pioneer and cowboy life to prepare for tomorrow’s field trip to the Cowtown museum.  The 1st and 2nd grade classes will leave the school at 9:00 a.m. and return by 3:00 p.m. tomorrow.  The students will need to dress comfortably for a day that will be spent mostly outside, and they will need to bring a disposable sack lunch.  In the morning, our 1st grade class will learn about cowboy life in a program led by Cowtown’s director.  We will then enjoy a picnic lunch.   In the afternoon, the 1st graders will experience some lessons in the little one-room schoolhouse and have a pioneer-style recess before touring the rest of Cowtown.  It will be a full, busy day!

The students learned a new song, Welcome, Neighbor!, during today’s Reading lesson.  They practiced breaking words into syllables and counting the number of syllables in each word, then worked with adding the suffixes “ly” and “ful” to basewords.    They practiced their listening skills during a story entitled “The Cat Chase,” and they practiced the comprehension skill of “cause and effect.”

In Spelling, the students worked with words that contain the “ly” and “ful” suffixes.  This week’s spelling words are:  slowly, careful, quickly, useful, painful, playful, sadly, gladly, nicely, wonderful.  This week’s “bonus” words are because and across.  This week’s Dictation Sentences are:

  1. Be careful when you ride your bike.
  2. This is a wonderful day.
  3. You sing very nicely.

The students worked with adjectives that compare during today’s English lesson.  In previous weeks, the students have worked with adjectives that describe color, shape, size, number, and adjectives that tell “what kind of.”

The students played a number recognition game called “Cinco” (which was very similar to “Bingo”) to open today’s Math lesson.  The students then independently completed math seatwork that reviewed such skills as place-value, odd & even numbers, addition, telling time by the quarter-hour, counting by 10s, and solving number problems.

Students’ “homework” for tonight:  Begin to study this week’s Reading Sight Words and complete this week’s Spelling Activities.
