Wellington USD 353 Seeks Voter Approval for $22.6 Million Bond to Update Facilities and Enhance Student Learning
WELLINGTON, KS – [August 5, 2025] – Unified School District No. 353 (Wellington) is putting a $22.6 million general obligation bond issue before voters on November 4, 2025 to fund critical improvements across all district schools and facilities. The proposed bond aims to address aging infrastructure, improve learning environments, and increase energy efficiency for students and staff.
The comprehensive bond package, if approved, will provide much-needed updates to Wellington High School, Wellington Middle School, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Lincoln, and Washington Elementary Schools, Sumner County Academy, and other district facilities. Projects include vital roof replacements, upgraded HVAC systems for consistent classroom temperatures and energy efficiency, and minor enhancements to athletic and arts facilities, which will also address ADA accessibility.
"Our schools are the heart of our community, and this bond issue represents a crucial investment in our students and the essential long-term reliability of our educational spaces," said Adam Hatfield, Superintendent of Wellington USD 353. “We want to be fully transparent with our patrons and give them a complete picture of the work being planned and the tax implications of a bond passage. Our communication efforts about the bond will kick off soon. We will continue working with the district’s bond counsel to share the most accurate information possible.”
Key improvements outlined in the bond proposal include:
- Wellington High School: Critical roof and HVAC replacements, improved parking, and upgraded restrooms at the football field.
- Wellington Middle School: Extensive renovations including roof, building envelope, and HVAC improvements, along with parking upgrades, a modernized Ag shop, theater enhancements, and track and field improvements.
- Elementary Schools (Eisenhower, Kennedy, Lincoln, Washington): Essential roof, building, HVAC, and parking upgrades to ensure safe and comfortable spaces for our youngest learners.
- Sumner County Academy: Necessary roof and building improvements.
- District-wide: Overall HVAC improvements for energy efficiency, parking improvements at the tennis courts, and building upgrades to the District office.
"These projects are not just about bricks and mortar; they're about creating optimal conditions for learning and growth," added Brandon Earl, President of the USD 353 Board of Education. "By addressing these needs now, we can ensure our facilities are equipped to support our dedicated educators and provide our students with the best possible educational experience for years to come."
The general obligation bonds would be repaid over a period of time using local property tax revenues.
